Salvation army Hat WWI. Condition excellent. Only one I have ever encountered and put hands on from this era. Appears to be a mohair type construction in black with not much fading as seen. Large silk bow on the side. Trimmed in pleated same material. Red ribbon with “The Salvation Army crosses the front.
These can be seen in a few photos I have looked up of the period. The volunteer girls were often called “Doughnut Lassies” from the troops serving overseas. Also the chinstrap is present but separated on the right side as seen pinned. Still displays well. Mending would be easy. Inside lined with a silken material.
Red Cross, Jewish Board, Knights of Columbus and many others had uniforms and the men were in the trenches as well helping. Women got VERY close to the front lines giving care packages to the troops for moral. A super SCARCE WWI volunteer groups woman’s hat worn as a bonnet.
